Paraa Region – Gateway to Murchison Falls National Park & Nile River Safaris

The Paraa region of Murchison Falls National Park is one of the most popular and most visited areas in the park. It serves as the main gateway for tourists visiting the park. Located in the southern part of the park near the Nile River, Paraa is considered the heart of Murchison Falls and is well known for wildlife viewing and adventure activities.

The name Paraa means “home of hippos” in the local Luo language.

Paraa has a rich history. In 1907, Winston Churchill, a British explorer, walked a long distance, about 86 kilometers from Masindi town to reach Paraa. Earlier, in 1864, Sir Samuel Baker, another British explorer, wrote about the beauty of the Paraa region and the waterfall.

Paraa can easily be accessed through the southern Kichumbanyobo Gate by visitors coming from Kampala via the Masindi route. Tourists coming from the northern side of the park, including the Chobe area, can reach Paraa by using the Paraa ferry, which connects the northern and southern banks of the Nile River.

Paraa is the starting point for most of the major activities in Murchison Falls National Park, including game drives, boat cruises, and nature walks.

The most popular activity in the Paraa region is the boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls. Tourists enjoy a scenic ride along the Nile, where they can see hippos, crocodiles, and birds along the riverbanks. When the boat reaches the falls, the sight of water squeezing through a narrow gorge is an unforgettable experience.

During game drives in the Paraa region, visitors will see various animals in the open Savannah, such as giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lions, leopards, and others. Morning and evening game drives are common and offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Paraa is also a great spot for birdwatchers, with many bird species found in the area, including the Goliath heron, pied kingfishers, malachite kingfishers, and the shoebill stork.

In addition to its natural beauty, Paraa is known for its cultural history. The area is home to local communities, including the Luo and Banyoro people, who have lived in this region for many years.

Paraa also hosts several accommodation options. The most well-known is Paraa Safari Lodge, one of the oldest and most luxurious lodges in the park. Other options include Baker’s Lodge, Red Chilli Rest Camp, Nile Safari Lodge, Sambiya River Lodge, Twiga Safari Lodge, Pakuba Safari Lodge, Murchison River Lodge, and Hornbill Bush Lodge.

Paraa can be visited throughout the year, but the best time is during the dry season, from June to August and December to February.

The Paraa region is full of natural beauty and cultural heritage. It offers visitors unforgettable memories and a deep connection to the wild.
