Why Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Exists
White rhinos became extinct in Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park due to poaching and civil unrest in the 1980s. Today, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary plays an important role in conservation, tourism, and education for those who want to learn more about rhinos.
The government of Uganda, together with Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, established the sanctuary to help reintroduce white rhinos into the country. The sanctuary was set up in 2005, and the first rhinos were brought in from Kenya. Since then, the population has grown to over 30 rhinos.
