Karuma Game Reserve – Wildlife Stopover Near Murchison Falls

Karuma Game Reserve - Wildlife Stopover Near Murchison Falls

Karuma Game Reserve is located along the banks of the Nile River, which plays a big role in shaping the area and supporting the many animal species found there.

The reserve is in Kiryandongo District and covers about 317 square kilometers.

It is named after the famous Karuma Falls, which are close to the reserve and offer beautiful views for tourists.

Karuma Game Reserve lies in the eastern part of Murchison Falls National Park.

It is part of the larger Murchison Conservation Area and is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The reserve was established in the 1960s mainly to protect wildlife and to act as a buffer zone between Murchison Falls National Park and nearby villages.

“Karuma” is a local name that means “great spirit,” based on a belief that a spirit placed the rocks over which the falls flow.

In recent years, people have encroached on parts of the reserve, mainly due to the establishment of the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement Camp.

Even with this pressure, Karuma Game Reserve remains home to many animals, although their numbers are fewer than in the past.

Today, the reserve is home to more than 40 animal species that live in the Savannah grasslands, woodlands, and riverine forests. Some of these include Uganda kob, elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys, olive baboons, lions, and leopards.

Tourists visiting Karuma Game Reserve can take part in different activities to explore wildlife and enjoy nature.

One popular activity is a game drive through the reserve to see animals in their natural home. These drives usually happen in the morning or afternoon, when animals are most active.

Lions may be seen hunting, while elephants, buffaloes, and Uganda kobs are often seen grazing.

Bird watching is another popular activity, as the reserve has more than 200 bird species. These can be seen during guided walks in the area.

Viewing Karuma Falls is one of the most relaxing experiences. The falls flow over uniquely shaped rocks, and tourists enjoy both the view and the sound of the water.

Visitors can also take part in community tours in the Kiryandongo area and learn about local life and culture.

Karuma Game Reserve can be reached by road from Kampala, following the Gulu-Kampala highway. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours.

The best time to visit is during the dry seasons: from June to August and December to February.

Tourists on longer safaris can stay in nearby accommodations either in Murchison Falls National Park or in Kiryandongo town. Options include Murchison Motorhome Park, Murchison Motels, Kiwi Park Motels, Murchison Lodge, and others.

Karuma Game Reserve gives tourists a chance to enjoy wildlife and connect with nature in the heart of Africa.
