ATMs are available in towns near Murchison Falls National Park. However, visitors should plan ahead because there are no ATMs inside the park.
ATMs can be found in towns such as Masindi (about 80 km southeast of the park), Gulu (about 150 km northeast), and smaller towns like Pakwach and Buliisa.
Masindi is one of the closest major towns to the park and has several ATMs, including Stanbic Bank, Centenary Bank, and Equity Bank. These ATMs accept international Visa and Mastercard debit or credit cards. However, international visitors may face higher transaction fees, so it is a good idea to check with your bank before your trip.
Gulu is another major town with several ATMs for travelers coming from the northern region. Banks like Absa, DFCU, Bank of Africa, and Centenary Bank have ATMs that accept international cards.
Tourists can also withdraw cash from ATMs in Kampala before heading to the park. Kampala is the capital and business center of Uganda, with many banks located in shopping malls and around the city.
It is important to note that credit cards are not widely accepted in Murchison Falls, except at a few lodges such as Paraa Safari Lodge and Chobe Safari Lodge. Visitors are advised to carry enough cash and withdraw it in advance, as cash is the most common form of payment in Uganda.
In emergencies where cash runs out, some lodges may offer currency exchange services, but these rates may be less favorable than those offered by banks.
Mobile money is also widely used in Uganda. Many banks work together with mobile network companies to allow users to transfer money between bank accounts and mobile wallets. MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are commonly used for this purpose. However, this service is more accessible to locals and may not be convenient for international visitors.
ATMs are a quick and easy way to get cash for your safari, but it is important to withdraw money before entering the park to ensure a smooth and stress-free trip.
