African Buffaloes of Murchison Falls National Park

Buffaloes in Murchison Falls - Where to See Africa's Most Powerful Herds

The African buffalo, also known as the Cape buffalo, is a wild animal commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa. In Murchison Falls National Park, it is one of the famous Big Five animals, along with lions, leopards, elephants, and rhinos.

Size and Appearance

Buffaloes are large animals. Male buffaloes can weigh about 900 kg or more and stand up to 1.6 meters tall. Female buffaloes can weigh up to 800 kg.

One of the most interesting features of buffaloes is their curved horns, which grow pointing toward the head. Both males and females have horns, but the horns of males are larger.

These horns are important because buffaloes use them to protect themselves from predators and to fight with other buffaloes.

Habitat and Diet

In Murchison Falls, buffaloes live in savannah grasslands and woodlands where they can find plenty of food, since they are grazers.

Buffaloes are herbivores, meaning they feed on grasses, leaves, and shrubs. During the wet season, they eat fresh green plants. In the dry season, they survive by eating plants that can handle drought and those found near water sources.

Social Structure

Buffaloes are social animals and live in groups called herds. A herd can have around 100 members and is usually led by a dominant male called a bull. The bull keeps order in the group and protects the herd from predators. Bulls also fight other males to show dominance and earn the right to mate.

Females in the herd give birth and help grow the herd’s population. Staying in a group is very important for buffaloes because it gives them better protection from predators.

Behavior and Danger

Buffaloes can be aggressive and unpredictable, especially when they feel threatened. This makes them dangerous, so visitors to Murchison Falls should keep a safe distance when watching them.

Even though they are large, buffaloes are surprisingly fast. They can run up to 56 kilometers per hour when escaping from danger.

Lifespan and Wallowing

In the wild, buffaloes can live between 20 and 25 years, but some may live up to 40 years.

Tourists often see buffaloes during game drives. They may see them grazing or wallowing in mud. Wallowing is important for buffaloes because the mud helps protect their skin from the sun and keeps their body temperature stable.

Where to See Buffaloes

Large herds of buffaloes are commonly seen in the Paraa area of Murchison Falls National Park.

Conservation of Buffaloes

Although buffaloes in Murchison Falls are not endangered, they still face threats such as habitat loss and poaching. Organizations like the Uganda Wildlife Authority help protect them through anti-poaching efforts and monitoring their habitats.

Buffaloes in Murchison Falls are an important part of Uganda’s wildlife. Book a game drive to see large buffalo herds in the Paraa area during your safari.
