While many tourists choose to travel to Uganda’s most popular national park, Murchison Falls, by road, flying to the park is becoming more popular due to the convenience and views it offers along the way.
Flying vs Driving
Traveling by road from Kampala, the capital city, takes about 5 to 6 hours. A flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to one of the park’s airstrips takes only 1 to 2 hours, allowing tourists to spend more time exploring the park.
Airlines and Airstrips
Several domestic airlines operate flights to Murchison Falls, including Aerolink Uganda, Fly Uganda, and Bar Aviation. These airlines offer both scheduled and charter flights.
The most commonly used airstrip is Pakuba Airstrip, located in the northern part of the park. Other airstrips include Chobe and Bugungu.
What to Expect on the Flight
Flights to Murchison Falls are handled by small aircraft, usually carrying about 8 passengers. Tourists are advised to give accurate information about their luggage in advance.
As you fly to the park, you will enjoy views of forests, hills, and the Nile River, creating a scenic journey before landing.
Flight Costs
Flights are more expensive than road travel because they save time and offer a different kind of experience. The cost of a flight depends on the airline and whether it is a scheduled or charter flight. One-way flight tickets usually range from USD 150 to USD 300 per person.
Arrival at the Park
When you arrive at Murchison Falls National Park, a guide from your lodge meets you and takes you to your accommodation, where you’ll stay during your safari. Tourists can then begin exploring the park and enjoy the many activities it offers.
Activities in the Park
Murchison Falls is one of the largest national parks in Uganda, with many attractions including wildlife, the Nile River, and the falls themselves.
Tourists can enjoy a boat cruise from Paraa to the base of the falls, an experience that creates lasting memories along the river. There are also game drives where tourists can see animals such as lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, and giraffes. Game drives run in the morning and evening and take you through the park’s savannah.
Tourists can also enjoy bird watching. The park is home to over 450 bird species, with the shoebill being the most sought-after. Many birds can be seen during nature walks and game drives.
Flights vs Road Trips
Flights to Murchison Falls provide a fast way to reach the park. However, while flights save time, road trips allow stops at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a trade-off worth considering when planning your trip.
