The hike to the top of Murchison Falls is one of the most interesting activities in the park. Book this activity to experience the falls from different angles and enjoy peaceful moments in nature.
The Hike to the Top
The hike begins at the bottom of the falls, where the Nile River forces its way through a narrow gorge with powerful water flow. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the top, on a trail that is steep and can be challenging. Hikers need to be physically fit to enjoy the experience fully, but the reward is well worth the effort.
The trail passes through rocky terrain and green vegetation, so strong hiking boots are recommended. As you move closer to the top, the sound of the rushing water grows louder.
At the top, wide views of Murchison Falls open up. From here, you can clearly see the powerful drop and the natural gorge known as the Devil’s Cauldron. Nature lovers can take in open views of the landscape and spot wildlife such as crocodiles, hippos, and various birds in and around the river.
Besides the natural beauty, the top of Murchison Falls also holds historical value. Visitors can explore the remains of an old British colonial fort built in the early 1900s to manage river transport along the Nile.
Resting and Heading Back Down
As the day warms up, visitors can rest at the top and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The hike down also offers great views of the Nile River and the surrounding land, and many visitors leave the hike feeling calm and taken by the beauty of nature.
Uganda’s weather can be unpredictable, so it helps to prepare in advance. Tourists are advised to carry rain jackets, sunscreen, a hat, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the hike.
The best time to hike to the top of Murchison Falls is during the dry season, from June to August and December to February, when the trail is dry and easier to walk on.
