Colobus Monkeys in Murchison Falls – Where to Spot These Rare Primates

Colobus Monkeys in Murchison Falls - Where to Spot These Rare Primates

Living within the forest canopies, savannah woodlands, and riverine forests of Murchison Falls National Park are the colobus monkeys. Colobus monkeys are easy to recognize by their long black-and-white fur and their small thumb, which helps them swing easily from branch to branch.

The species found in Murchison Falls is the Guereza colobus, which has a U-shaped white mantle and a long bushy tail that helps with balance. Unlike other monkeys in the park, colobus monkeys are shy and avoid human contact. They prefer thick forested areas where they are not easily seen.

Colobus Monkeys in Murchison Falls

Colobus monkeys are social and live in groups led by a dominant male. A typical group includes one male, several females, and their young. Most groups have 10 to 15 members, but some can be larger.

Unlike some primates that fight, colobus monkeys are peaceful. They solve conflicts by using vocal sounds instead of physical fights.

Their vocalizations include roars, snorts, alarm calls, chatter, screams, and grunts.

Colobus monkeys mainly eat plants. Their diet includes leaves, fruits, flowers, shoots, stems, bark, and roots. They have multi-chambered stomachs that help break down tough plant material and absorb nutrients.

Their gestation period is about six months, and females usually give birth to one infant at a time. Newborns have white fur that darkens as they grow.

Colobus monkeys are different from many other primates because they sometimes leave their young in tree nests while searching for food. The mothers care for their infants for up to a year before they become independent. Females reach maturity at around 4 years, while males mature at about 6 years.

In the wild, colobus monkeys can live up to 20 years, but they are at risk from predators.

Their main predators include leopards, eagles, and chimpanzees. However, their black-and-white coloring helps them blend into the treetops and avoid danger.

In Murchison Falls, colobus monkeys are commonly found in Budongo Forest, Kaniyo Pabidi, and Rabongo Forest, where tourists can spot them during guided nature walks.

Colobus monkeys are unique animals that offer visitors a chance to enjoy memorable wildlife experiences.
