Located in the northern sector of Murchison Falls National Park is the Albert Game Track. Book a game drive along this track to see the Big Five, large antelope herds, and views of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Location and Route
The Albert Game Track consists of several trails that wind through the northern part of the park, stretching from the Victoria Nile to the Albert Nile. It was named after Lake Albert, one of the lakes in the East African Rift Valley in Uganda. The track connects to the Buligi and Pakuba game tracks and runs about 11 kilometers.
Wildlife on the Albert Game Track
The Albert Game Track is home to some of the Big Five mammals, including lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes. Elephants and buffaloes are often seen grazing, while lions and leopards may be spotted hunting or resting under acacia trees.
The area is also a good place to see antelopes like waterbucks, bushbucks, and oribis, often in large numbers, making sightings here notable. Giraffes are also found here, feeding on the tall acacia trees, including the Rothschild’s giraffe, the most endangered giraffe subspecies, commonly seen in Murchison Falls National Park.
Birdlife on the Track
Albert Game Track is rich in birdlife, with around 450 bird species recorded, including the Abyssinian ground hornbill, African grey parrot, and shoebill stork, among others.
Boat Safaris and the Falls Hike
Because the track is close to the Nile River, tourists can enjoy boat safaris. A boat cruise along the Nile brings sightings of hippos and crocodiles resting along the riverbanks. Tourists can also hike to the top of Murchison Falls, a challenging trek that offers strong views of the surrounding area.
Conservation on the Albert Game Track
Conservation efforts have helped protect the Albert Game Track and its wildlife. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has carried out anti-poaching patrols, promoted sustainable tourism, and worked with nearby communities to protect the park’s natural resources.
Best Time to Visit
The Albert Game Track can be visited all year round, but the best time is during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. During these months, the weather is more predictable, and animals are easier to spot as they gather at water sources.
