Nestled in the town of Masindi, the district headquarters of Masindi District in western Uganda, is Masindi Hotel. The hotel was established by the now-defunct East African Railways and Harbours Company.
Over the years, Masindi Hotel has become a popular stop for many travelers and stands as a sign of the growth of hospitality in the country.
The hotel has a rich history. It once served European settlers and adventurers, offering the comfort and service they looked for. One of the well-known guests was Ernest Hemingway, who stayed at the hotel while recovering after surviving two serious aircraft accidents near Murchison Falls and Butiaba airstrip.

Other guests included Hollywood stars Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, who stayed there while filming the classic African adventure movie The African Queen.
After Uganda gained independence, the hotel was taken over by the government. In 2000, it was privatized, marking the start of renovation and modernization.
The hotel offers about 46 guest rooms, all carefully designed to provide comfort and to blend colonial charm with modern touches. There are different types of rooms to suit all kinds of travelers.
The Ernest Hemingway Room has six units, each designed with modern features in memory of the famous writer.
The Masindi Cottage includes seven units with double and single beds. Each room covers about 25.1 square meters.
The African Queen Premium has nine rooms, providing a space where comfort and modern design meet.
The Kitara Deluxe offers five smaller rooms for travelers who prefer a compact space. These rooms are between 14 and 19 square meters, each with a single bed and other modern features.
The African Queen Executive includes six rooms, each with either a double bed or two single beds.
For families or groups, the Masindi Suite has eight rooms. Each room offers two double beds and an extra single bed, covering about 26 square meters.
Finally, the Baker Deluxe includes five rooms ranging from 16 to 20 square meters.
All rooms have modern amenities, including flush toilets, en suite bathrooms, hot and cold showers, air conditioning, internet access, and comfortable beds.
Adding to the experience is the on-site Kabalenga Restaurant, which serves both Ugandan and international meals.
Safety and security are a top priority at the hotel. CCTV cameras are in place, and trained staff are available to help guests at any time.
Masindi Hotel is a place where the history of Uganda is honored through its service, design, and welcoming atmosphere.
