Buliisa District is located in the western region of Uganda. It is an area rich in natural resources and has a strong cultural background.
The district borders Lake Albert to the west and also shares boundaries with Hoima and Masindi districts, as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Buliisa covers an area of about 1,947 square kilometers. Its landscapes include Savannah grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands.
Part of Uganda’s largest conservation area, Murchison Falls National Park, lies within Buliisa District. This section of the park is home to buffaloes, lions, leopards, elephants, and many bird species.
Because of its closeness to both the park and Lake Albert, Buliisa has become a growing tourist destination, attracting visitors for its wildlife and scenery.
The discovery of oil in the Albertine region has also brought Buliisa into the spotlight. The district is now a center for Uganda’s petroleum industry. Companies such as TotalEnergies, which is operating the Tilenga oil project, are actively involved in oil extraction expected to support both local and national economic growth.
The main economic activity in Buliisa is agriculture, which is the backbone of the district’s economy. Most people grow crops such as cassava, maize, beans, millet, and tobacco. Livestock farming is also common, with many residents keeping cattle, goats, and poultry.
Buliisa is mainly inhabited by the Banyoro and Alur communities. The Banyoro, who make up the majority, are part of the larger Bunyoro Kingdom, which is known for its rich culture and history. Their traditional dances like Runyege and Entogoro are performed during ceremonies. The Alur people are closely connected to West Nile traditions and are well known for their music and storytelling.
Infrastructure in Buliisa is still developing. However, there have been improvements, especially in road construction, supported by the government and oil companies to improve access to trade centers.
Despite the progress, natural resources in Buliisa face threats. Deforestation for farming is reducing wildlife habitats. In addition, oil exploration poses risks such as water pollution, which may affect the ecosystem of Lake Albert.
Buliisa District is an important area in Uganda. Its natural beauty, wildlife, oil development, and cultural richness make it a place worth visiting and protecting.
