Kiryandongo District is located in the western region of Uganda. It was created in 2010 after being separated from Masindi District.

It lies in the Albertine region, an area known for oil discoveries and its closeness to Murchison Falls National Park. This location attracts interest from both local and international communities.
The climate in Kiryandongo includes two rainy seasons each year. These rains, together with the fertile soil, make farming successful.
The district has a large population, mostly made up of the Banyoro people. There are also other groups like the Langi and Acholi who moved here after being displaced from the north.
Kiryandongo is also home to many refugees from South Sudan, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement is the largest in the country and provides shelter, health care, and education for the refugees.
Agriculture is the main economic activity in the district. Thanks to the fertile soil, people grow crops such as maize, beans, soybeans, and rice.
The district is a key food supplier to urban areas like Kampala, and commercial farming has continued to grow.
Another important economic activity is trade. Kiryandongo is located along the Kampala-Gulu highway, making it an important transit point for goods moving between the north and other regions of Uganda.
Infrastructure in the district is improving. The Kampala-Gulu highway runs through it, and many smaller roads have been upgraded from murram to tarmac.
Electricity has also expanded in the district, mainly due to the Karuma Hydropower Project, one of the largest in the country.
Kiryandongo District is a special region because of its natural environment, its people, and the ongoing development projects.
