Boomu Women’s Group - Authentic Cultural Experience Near Murchison Falls

Boomu Women’s Group is a community-based project started in 1999. Its main goal is to improve the lives of women and children by reducing malnutrition and poverty, while also promoting formal education. Book a visit to experience a true African cultural stay near Murchison Falls National Park.

Origins of the Group

The group began in the early 1990s when subsistence farmers from two villages, Kigaragara and Kihaguzi, came together. After losing much of their harvest due to a severe drought, they started making crafts from what little they had left. These efforts later grew into a tourism project, which now includes village guided tours, gardens, a restaurant, and traditional budget accommodation.

Although the name is Boomu Women’s Group, men are also part of the project and play active roles in its activities.

Location

The group is located about 13 miles from Masindi in Kigaragara Village, Kihaguzi Parish, close to Kichumbanyobo Gate of Murchison Falls National Park and Budongo Forest Reserve.

This is a typical African village, and modern comforts like running water, electricity, and solar lighting are not available in the village itself. Staying at Boomu gives tourists the chance to experience traditional African life in an authentic village setting.

Cultural Activities

  • Traditional songs
  • Traditional dances
  • Harvesting and cooking local food using firewood
  • Eating the traditional way, sitting on mats and using hands
