Boomu Women’s Group is a community-based project started in 1999. Its main goal is to improve the lives of women and children by reducing malnutrition and poverty, while also promoting formal education.
The group began in the early 1990s when subsistence farmers from two villages, Kigaragara and Kihaguzi, came together. After losing much of their harvest due to a severe drought, they started making crafts from what little they had left. These efforts later grew into a tourism project, which now includes village guided tours, gardens, a restaurant, and traditional budget accommodation.
When you visit the Boomu Women’s Group, you get to enjoy a true African cultural experience, all while relaxing near Murchison Falls National Park.
Although the name is Boomu Women’s Group, it’s important to know that men are also part of the project and play active roles in its activities.
The group is located about 13 miles from Masindi in Kigaragara Village, Kihaguzi Parish, close to the Kichumbanyobo Gate of Murchison Falls National Park and Budongo Forest Reserve.
This is a typical African village, and modern comforts like running water, electricity, and solar lighting are not available in the village itself.
Staying at Boomu gives tourists the chance to enjoy and experience traditional African life in an authentic village setting.
Tourists can take part in several cultural activities, including:
- Traditional songs
- Traditional dances
- Harvesting and cooking local food using firewood
- Eating the traditional way: sitting on mats and using hands
The traditional huts, cottages, or bandas offered by the group are surrounded by nature, flowers, and shrubs. Birds and butterflies are often seen nearby. Visitors are provided with warm water in jerrycans for bathing, and clean, eco-friendly toilets are available.
Campfires are also provided in the evening, offering a place for entertainment and cultural exchange.
You can enjoy a meaningful and memorable African village experience with Boomu Women’s Group whenever you visit Murchison Falls National Park.
