Murchison Falls National Park Official Visitor Rules & Safety Guide

Murchison Falls National Park Official Visitor Rules & Safety Guide

Murchison Falls National Park is home to many animals, including four of the Big Five, and many bird species. It is the largest national park in Uganda and a major tourism destination. While many activities take place in the park, its main purpose is to protect wildlife and their natural environment.

To make sure this goal is achieved, Uganda Wildlife Authority has set a list of rules and regulations for all visitors. These rules help keep both wildlife and people safe.

Here are some of the main rules:

  • Do not drive above the speed limit of 40 km/h. Wildlife has the right of way, and driving slowly helps avoid accidents with animals.
  • Do not sound your car horn. Loud noises disturb the animals.
  • Do not drive in the park before 6:00 am or after 7:00 pm. This helps protect animals and ensures visitors are safe.
  • Do not get out of your car unless your tour guide gives you permission.
  • Do not litter. Keep trash in your car and dispose of it in rubbish bins at the park entrance.
  • Do not pick flowers or damage any vegetation. Be respectful of nature.
  • Off-track driving is not allowed and carries a fine of $150.
  • Pets and dogs are not allowed in the park.
  • Do not camp or light campfires outside the designated camping areas.
  • Smoke only in designated smoking areas. Do not throw cigarette butts or matches anywhere in the park.
  • Firearms and any kind of ammunition are not allowed inside the park.
  • Park entry is allowed only after paying the required fees. Always carry your receipt or entry card and be ready to show it during inspections.

These rules are important not only in Murchison Falls but also in all national parks in Uganda. Following them helps protect the environment, wildlife, and all visitors.
