Located in the northern sector of Murchison Falls National Park is the Albert Game Track. This track consists of several trails that wind through the northern part of the park, stretching from the Victoria Nile to the Albert Nile. It was named after Lake Albert, one of the lakes in the East African Rift Valley in Uganda.
The Albert Game Track offers tourists a great chance to see animals that come to drink water, and it also provides views of the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. The track connects to the Buligi and Pakuba game tracks and is about 11 kilometers long.
The Albert Game Track is home to some of the Big Five mammals, including lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes. Elephants and buffaloes are often seen grazing, while lions and leopards may be spotted hunting or resting under acacia trees.
In addition, this area is a good place to see antelopes like waterbucks, bushbucks, and oribis. These animals are often seen in large numbers, making the sightings in this area special.
Giraffes are also found here, feeding on the tall acacia trees. The Rothschild’s giraffe, the most endangered giraffe subspecies, is commonly seen in Murchison Falls National Park.
Albert Game Track is rich in birdlife, with around 450 bird species recorded. Some of the birds seen here include the Abyssinian ground hornbill, African grey parrot, and shoebill stork, among others.
Because the track is close to the Nile River, tourists can enjoy boat safaris. A boat cruise along the Nile allows visitors to spot animals like hippos and crocodiles resting along the riverbanks.
Tourists can also hike to the top of Murchison Falls. While the hike may be challenging, it offers great views of the surrounding area.
Conservation efforts have helped protect the Albert Game Track and its wildlife. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has carried out anti-poaching patrols, promoted sustainable tourism, and worked with nearby communities to protect the park’s natural resources.
The Albert Game Track can be visited all year round, but the best time is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February. During these months, the weather is more predictable, and animals are easier to spot as they gather at water sources.
